{"id":238,"date":"2008-01-21T08:32:37","date_gmt":"2008-01-21T14:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pkenagy.com\/blog\/?p=238"},"modified":"2008-01-21T08:32:37","modified_gmt":"2008-01-21T14:32:37","slug":"keep-them-holidays-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pkenagy.com\/blog\/keep-them-holidays-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep Them Holidays Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got the day off, SWEET.\u00a0 An entire day to rest up from an exhausting weekend of&#8230; Nothing.\u00a0 Friday I was too spent to do anything.\u00a0 I sat on the couch and watched a few movies, including the internationally acclaimed thriller &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0422401\/\" title=\"Hatchet\" target=\"_blank\">Hatchet<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Ninety minutes of senseless gore;\u00a0 Nice.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, once it warmed up just enough to step out the door without losing fingers to frostbite, we headed down to the swanky Power &amp; Light district.\u00a0 We met up with the Munkirs at McFadden&#8217;s for a little lunch, and loitered there for a few hours.\u00a0 After lunch we scurried back to Midtown for another low-key evening.\u00a0 Donette took the car to the shop for some &#8220;emergency maintenance.&#8221;\u00a0 The mysterious &#8220;check engine&#8221; light had been on for a few days, and we thought we&#8217;d better get it looked at.\u00a0 What a drag, I hate spending money on cars.\u00a0 I try to rationalize that a trip to the mechanic once or twice a year to fix our ten year old car is a lot cheaper than a car payment, but I never really convince myself.\u00a0 I have all kinds of cool toys lined up that I want, and instead I get the seventh fetzer valve replaced in my car.\u00a0 Bummer.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s one less thing to worry about I suppose.\u00a0 Meanwhile, I stood in front of a hot stove and practiced my gumbo technique.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been commissioned to whip up a pot of gumbo for Float Trip, and the pressure is building already.\u00a0 It came out pretty well, aside from the third-degree burns on my hand.\u00a0 Man, you do not want to be too aggressive stirring that hot roux.\u00a0 Stuff is like napalm.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday we had our sights on another day on the couch, but we rallied briefly to go visit everybody down at the Brooksider.\u00a0 In something of a dramatic shift in scenery, we sat on the south side the whole time we were there!\u00a0 Sometimes we just get crazy like that.\u00a0 We thought maybe the air quality would be a little better.\u00a0 Naturally this theory didn&#8217;t pan out, and the smoke drove us back home pretty quickly.\u00a0 That pretty much wrapped up Sunday.\u00a0 We sat on the couch and watched the football games and tried to entertain the dogs, who are darn near stir-crazy from being cooped up.\u00a0 (But they won&#8217;t go out in the cold.)\u00a0 Schmitty came over for a bit and picked up some scrap PC parts, but didn&#8217;t stay too long.\u00a0 Maybe he wasn&#8217;t comfortable sitting around with us in our jammies at 7 o&#8217;clock in the evening.\u00a0 We were plenty comfortable though.<\/p>\n<p>For the holiday today, I have my sights set on roasting a big ol&#8217; 5 lb. piece of beef.\u00a0 I will be using a recipe from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saveur.com\/food\/classic-recipes\/prime-rib-21017532.html\" title=\"beef roast\" target=\"_blank\">Saveur<\/a>, substituting a rump roast for the rib roast.\u00a0 Oh, the excitement is thick in the air at the Kenagy house.\u00a0 My plan is to roast it and shave it up for sandwiches.\u00a0 Daunting task, but I&#8217;m feeling kind of edgy today so I figured &#8220;what the heck.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s how I roll.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got the day off, SWEET.\u00a0 An entire day to rest up from an exhausting weekend of&#8230; Nothing.\u00a0 Friday I was too spent to do anything.\u00a0 I sat on the couch and watched a few movies, including the internationally acclaimed thriller &#8220;Hatchet.&#8221;\u00a0 Ninety minutes of senseless gore;\u00a0 Nice.
